About our Classes

Introductory Level: assumes no prior dance background.

At this level you will be introduced to the basic footwork, isolations, shimmies, cymbal-playing and, of course, magical veil movements that are the hallmark of this remarkable dance.  You will hear different types of Middle Eastern music (there are many!), and learn about its varying rhythms and instruments, and the musicians who play these beautiful songs.

All beginner classes are designed to give students ample individual attention.  Each class includes a warm-up, hands-on instruction in isolations and basic dance steps, an aerobic section where we “put it all together” and ends with a cool-down period.  Throughout it all you will learn correct posture, alignment and grace while dancing, and most important...you’ll have fun!.

You may repeat introductory sessions for as many times as you are comfortable, but it is most appropriate for newcomers and students who have had less than 24 lessons.

Level II, Beyond the Basics: assumes six-months of previous study

At this level we review Introductory material and introduce ‘layering,’ that is, adding shimmies, undulations and more complex arm framing to steps that were previously learned.  Zills (finger cymbals) are practiced in every class, and new material/technique is added which will expand your repertoire of movement.  Choreography and combinations that were taught at the Introductory Level are also reviewed but revised to include more advance movements.

In Level II you will begin making the dance your own.  Exercises are introduced that will integrate your dance movements and guide you through the creation of your own improvisational dance.  Here is where your personality shines through and you truly begin celebrating the joy and beauty of Middle Eastern Dance!

Level II, Beyond the Basics emphasizes proper posture and alignment while building the strength, flexibility and poise of the dancer.

Class Attire/Materials

Most students begin studying Middle Eastern Dance for fun and exercise -- so wear something to class that makes you feel comfortable.  While there is no dress code for class, stretchy yoga-type pants and a fitted tee or cami work best.  If you wear a baggy tee and pants it’s difficult to see your back and knees…areas that often need correction for posture and alignment.

An inexpensive scarf or shawl tied around your hips will help to complement your movements...and it just makes dancing more fun.  If you’d like something fancier, you may purchase a hip scarf online or at a local store.  Prices generally range from $22 - $38.

Level I students will also need a veil and finger cymbals at some point during their studies.  Finger cymbals may be purchased in class for $12/set of four; they can also be found by surfing the web.  Veils can be purchased at your local fabric store.  I recommend Lorraine’s in Pawtucket (their prices are great!) or Jo-Ann Fabrics.  You will need 3 ˝ yards of a soft, lightweight, sheer fabric, nylon tricot for example.  Knits are best because they do not ravel, otherwise you will need to hem the edges

Missed Classes

To ensure that you receive the greatest benefit from your enrollment, the missed-class/ make-up policy is very flexible.

If you miss your regularly scheduled class you may take a make-up class in any other class. Please note that a make-up class may not be added to the end of your paid session! However, as long as you are enrolled as a student, you may take a make-up class from a previous session. If you know in advance that you will be missing a class, you may take a make-up in advance of the missed class.

Age Limit

One of the most frequently asked questions by women who are contemplating a Middle Eastern Dance class is about age.  One of the beauties of this remarkable dance is that it is appropriate for women of all ages.  If you were to attend an Arabic Hafli (party) you would see young girls dance alongside their grandmothers, each offering a lovely interpretation of the music.

Generally, the women attending my classes are between the ages of 25 and 65, but there have been exceptions.  I recently held a class that 5 teenagers attended, and their exuberance was contagious.  More often I see women in their 50’s and 60’s who are celebrating life by embracing dance classes.
